Green nanotechnology has been described as the development of clean technologies
The growing need to develop environmentally friendly technologies for the synthesis of nanomaterials has given rise to a beneficial process in the areas of research and development of nanotechnology.
Green nanotechnology has been described as the development of clean technologies, “to minimize the potential risks to the environment and human health associated with the manufacture and use of nanotechnology products, and to encourage the replacement of existing products with new nanoproducts.” that are more respectful with the environment throughout their life cycle.
Toxic materials such as solvents and surfactants are frequently used to produce nanoparticles, which are a diverse group ranging from metals to metal oxides.1 One of the biggest concerns is the accumulation of these toxic materials in the environment that could affect all organisms that live there.
With the emergence of nanotechnology, the vision of obtaining a technology advanced enough to make it indistinguishable from fiction has been nurtured, which has found its development in hundreds of products for industrial applications, including the “chips” of computers, automobiles, sports equipment, clothing, medicines, cosmetics and dietary supplements, among many others. However, some scientists have already begun to question the ecological balance of the nascent nanorevolution.
In this sense, concern for the environment and public health has given rise to a beneficial process in the areas of research and development: green nanotechnology.
A new approach to the manufacture of these products, finding methodologies that are respectful of the environment and safer for all living beings, with sustainable commercial viability. Using existing principles of green chemistry and green engineering to make nanomaterials and nanoproducts without toxic ingredients, at low temperatures using less energy and renewable inputs whenever possible.
